Bright Day of the Sunny, New Snow Kind

Hard to believe it snowed most of yesterday. The sun blinds you today because of all the new snow. It's nice to see the fresh snow, squint at the sun, and hear the Bohemian Waxwings.

So have you seen Making Fiends? I find myself wanting to write down what Vendetta says so I can use it later. Click on the link to your right.

What's struck me these past few days has been the sunshine on the fresh snow. So much of winter (my first in Alaska) is buried not just under snow, but also by overcast skies. The light (or lack of it) really, really got to me.

Now, with this fresh coat of frosty white coupled with the brilliantly sharp contrasts of direct sunlight, I find myself squinting at the beauty of April in Alaska.

We ran away to Portage Lake on Saturday and it was so utterly beyond beautiful. All that blue sky and blue ice, laced and coated over with crystal white snow and not a cloud in the sky.

That's what I've been waiting for.

Of course, as I type this on Sunday, the sky is dreadfully overcast. (Sigh...)

Janson, I love the low-horizon light in the winter and in the summer, I miss it somewhat when there's so much light all the time. (I'm already bitchin about too much light.)
